UPPCS exam 2009 topper (1st Ranker) Rakesh Kumar Singh in an
interview to Kunal Jha shares the exam preparation strategy for UPPCS
exam. It will help students prepare better for the upcoming Union civil
Services and state civil services exams.The final result of UPPCS exam
2009 was declared on 31 March 2012.
Jagranjosh.com: Please tell us about your schooling and higher education?
Rakesh Kumar Singh: I did my matriculation from Shishu Mandir, Suraj Kund, Gorakhpur, 12th from MG Inter College Gorakhpur and BTECH from Bareilly University. Then I started preparing for civil services.
Jagranjosh.com: How many attempts did you take to crack UPPCS exam?
Rakesh Kumar Singh: It was my first attempt.
Jagranjosh.com: Why did you choose to become a civil servant?
Rakesh Kumar Singh: I wanted to be in public domain. Besides, it is the most prestigious among all public services.
Jagranjosh.com: How much time did you take to prepare for the UPPCS exam?
Rakesh Kumar Singh: It took me 3-4 years to prepare for the exam.
Jagranjosh.com: Did you use Internet? How helpful was it?
Rakesh Kumar Singh: Yes, I used Internet thoroughly. It was very helpful. It added a new dimension to my preparation.
Jagranjosh.com: Do you think jagranjosh.com is helpful for the preparation of UPPCS exam?
Rakesh Kumar Singh: Yes, It’s very helpful and a very good current affairs portal for competitive exams.
Jagranjosh.com: How do you like the current Affairs and other material on our website?
Rakesh Kumar Singh: It provides timely information and it is analytical in its approach to any news.
Jagranjosh.com: General Studies is a very vast section. How did you prepare for it?
Rakesh Kumar Singh: I divided General studies into two parts. Conventional and non-conventional. Conventional part included subjects like History, Geography, Economics and Indian Polity. I improved my basics in this area. The non-conventional part included current affairs for which I took help from newspapers and Internet.
Jagranjosh.com: The new syllabus of preliminary examination has introduced CSAT in place of optional paper. Do you think that it will help in selecting civil servants with right aptitude?
Rakesh Kumar Singh: It’s encouraging. It will bring all the students on equal ground.
Jagranjosh.com: What is your advice for candidates who did not do well in prelims?
Rakesh Kumar Singh: You should be very focused on your strategy. Believe in yourself. You should focus on all areas.
Jagranjosh.com: Is the Prelims the toughest or the easiest part of the whole exam?
Rakesh Kumar Singh: The Prelims is the toughest part of the whole exam.
Jgaranjosh.com: When did you start preparing for the Main examination?
Rakesh Kumar Singh: I started preparing for the Main examination at the same time when I was preparing for prelim examination.
Jagranjosh.com: What were your optional subjects for the main exam?
Rakesh Kumar Singh: Geography and Philosophy.
Jagranjosh.com: What was the basis for choosing optional subjects for the main exam?
Rakesh Kumar Singh: Geography was very scoring and my concepts in Philosophy subject were quite clear.
Jagranjosh.com: Please share the details of the interview? What was its duration, strength of the interview panel and what kind of questions were asked?
Rakesh Kumar Singh: I was interviewed by Mr. Tiwari’s board on 25th February 2012. It was 5-member board. I was asked questions on recent UP assembly elections, matters related to Geography and Economics. When the Swez canal was built? I was asked about Non-performing assets.
Jagranjosh.com: Do you think that good understanding of current affairs can play a significant role even in Interview?
Rakesh Kumar Singh: Yes, without that you can’t answer most of the questions asked in the interview. At least 70 to 80 percent questions asked in the interview are related to current affairs.
